Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893)
I had the good fortune to be in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, yesterday.
This painting is full of interesting detail.
The baby is hidden under her mother’s cape, but you can see her little hand.
The mother’s other hand held by her husband, has drawn some comment. People have likened it to a monkey’s hand.
I took a close look, yesterday, and I am convinced that it is a gloved hand.
This makes the fact that the mother has taken off her glove to hold her baby’s hand even more poignant.
